The Social Educators’ Association of Queensland (SEAQ) takes pleasure in inviting teachers from all year levels to take part in a professional learning webinar series:
Dealing with Intercultural Mis-Understanding
The General Capability of Intercultural Understanding is embedded in the content and elaborations of all Australian Curriculum learning areas. This is particularly so for the Social Education subjects of History and Geography. It also overlaps with the intent of the cross curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander histories and cultures and Australia’s engagement with Asia. These two webinars are designed to assist teachers develop the deep understanding of the concept of ‘culture’ required for implementation of the curriculum, as well as for dealing with cross-cultural misunderstandings within school communities.
DADDATES and TIME: There are two webinars in the series. They will be held on Thursday 13th March and Wednesday 19th March from 3.30 to 4.30 pm.
COST per webinar: $30 for members; $35 for non-members
REGISTRATION: Registration and payment are via our website – www.seaq.org.au
WHY SCHOOLS SHOULD TAKE PART:
Webinar 1(13/03/2014): Joy Schultz, educational consultant and SEAQ secretary, will explore the elements of the General Capability and practical ways to embed it in teaching practice. In doing so, she will examine the concept of ‘culture’ and the bases of cultural differences and similarities. The difference between race and culture will be considered, especially in relation to the cross-curriculum priorities, and throughout the webinar Joy will point out potential areas of misunderstanding around both concepts. She will consider in a general sense the effects of stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination in intercultural relationships, as well as pointing out teaching implications and some useful resources.
A QCT-compliant certificate will be provided.
Please register by Tuesday 4th March.
