Harmony Day, 21 March, celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. ' It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. It is a day for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity and to share what we have in common. The central message for Harmony Day is that ‘everyone belongs’, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians .' Harmony Day can be a context for exploring  the topics of identity, community and participating in an interconnected world.

The Australian Curriculum has embedded Inter-cultural Understanding as a General Capability of all students and one of the key ideas of the Humanities and Social Sciences learning area is about  'The ways people, places, ideas and events are perceived and connected'.

To extend this intention of the curriculum, year level focus questions guide teaching in this area. Below are some of these focus questions.:

  • Year 3 ' How can I participate in my Community?'
  • Year 4 ' How has my identity been shaped by the groups to which I belong?'
  • Year 5 ' How and why do people participate in groups to achieve shared goals?'
  • Year 6 ' What does it mean to be an Australian Citizen?'
  • Year 7   'How is Australia a diverse society and what factors contribute to a cohesive society?'.
  • Year 8 'How do citizens participate in an interconnected world?'
  • Year 9 ' How do citizens participate in an interconnected world?'
  • Year 10 'What are the features of a resilient democracy?'
